Robert said, "Abbott diabetes, based in Witney Industrial Estate, are world-leaders in diabetes care, continually developing new solutions to help those with this condition. I was lucky to visit them in July and see their factory in action.
"Behind the scenes, I have been helping Abbott to ensure that their FreeStyle Libre system, for those who have to inject themselves multiple times a day to check and self-monitor their glucose levels, will be available on the NHS. This new system reads glucose levels through a sensor, approximately the size of a £2 coin, worn on the back of the upper arm. The ease, convenience and discretion will be life-changing for those who currently need to inject themselves many times each day.
"I worked with both Abbott and the Department of Health to ensure that the system has now been classified on the Drug Tariff, meaning that, subject to local health economy approval, it will be available through the NHS across the UK from 1st November 2017.
"This is a great success story: a local business creating an innovative solution making a real-world difference to people’s everyday lives and I am glad to have been able to play a part in making this available to everybody."
