The Government has announced plans for roadside trials of new noise camera technology to combat noise pollution.
Noise pollution from illegally modified vehicles is a source of great distress for many communities across the country and can have serious impacts on health. I am therefore pleased that the Government is exploring the opportunities that innovative new technology can provide in cracking down on drivers flouting the law.
The Department for Transport’s first trials of noise cameras in 2019 sparked the development of new technology, both in the UK and beyond. However, there was further technical work to be done and the Government is now ready to test the latest version of the noise cameras.
The aim of this second phase of trials will be to assess whether the latest noise cameras can be used as an effective tool for future enforcement. A central part of this will be trialling noise cameras at four locations within England and Wales this Summer, working closely with MPs and enforcement authorities to ensure that the experience gained is embedded in those communities.
MPs are able to nominate one area in their constituencies to be considered for a trial of the new noise camera technology. Therefore, in my role as Member of Parliament for Witney and West Oxfordshire, I am encouraging constituents to suggest the area of West Oxfordshire they think is most impacted by excessively noisy vehicles and which would benefit most from noise camera technology.
Nominations can be made by completing the form below.
The deadline for nominations is 5pm on Monday 16th May. At this point, the three areas with the most nominations will be put to a vote on my website to establish the final nomination which will be submitted to the Government.
Please share widely and let's work together to tackle noise pollution!
