Robert said, "The Prime Minister last week launched the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan, highlighting our steps for a cleaner, greener Britain that will leave our environment in a better state than we found it for the next generation.
"We have always been a world leader in understanding and protecting the natural world but we recognise the environmental challenges that we face are acute. That is why we are pledging to eliminate all avoidable plastic waste by the end of 2042, encouraging supermarkets to introduce plastic-free aisles, extending the 5p charge for plastic carrier bags to all retailers, issue a consultation on taxing the most environmentally damaging plastics and help developing nations tackle pollution and plastic waste through UK aid. This builds on our extensive work in recent months that has shown that environmentalism is central to conservatism.
"I warmly welcome these changes; as a conservationist, and representing a largely rural constituency, I am fully aware of the consequences of a failure to protect our environment. Introducing the 5p carrier bag charge has led to 9 billion fewer plastic bags being used, and £95 million being donates to environmental causes. I am excited to see the positive impact that these steps will have in preserving our environment for future generations.
"The Government has already made several large strides to preserve our environment, such as banning microbeads and restricting the use of neonicotinoids, and I am pleased that we have put in place a clear, long-term plan for the future."
