Robert Courts KC former MP, was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Witney and West Oxfordshire in the October 2016 by-election. Robert was re-elected in both the 2017 and 2019 General Elections, on both occasions achieving over 55% of the vote, proudly serving the area until 4th July 2024.
In December 2023, Robert was appointed His Majesty’s Solicitor General for England & Wales, serving in this role until the 5th of July 2024. Prior to his appointment back into government, Robert proudly served on the House of Commons Defence Select committee, from October 2022 until October 2023 when he was elected as Chair of the Committee serving in post until December 2023.
In September 2020, Robert was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Department for Transport, with responsibility for aviation and maritime.
Before his promotion to Government, Robert was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Transport, having previously served as a PPS in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office from January to July 2018 and to the Secretary of State for the Environment from August 2019 until February 2020.
Robert served on the International Trade Select Committee before becoming a Minister, having previously served on the Transport Committee, which he was elected to in October 2018, and the Justice Committee, which he joined in January 2019. He had previously served on the Backbench Business Committee from 2016 to January 2018.
Robert has supported a number of groups in Parliament. He served as Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Aviation, founded the APPG for Community Transport; he was also the Vice-Chair (RAF) of the APPG for the Armed Forces, the APPG for Aerospace, the APPG for Dementia, and the APPG for Cycling.
Robert lives in West Oxfordshire with his wife, Kathryn, and two young children, Henry and Isabella.
Before his election to Parliament, Robert was a self-employed barrister for some twelve years. His practice, at 3 Paper Buildings in Oxford, focused primarily on personal injury and clinical negligence, with a trading standards prosecution specialism.
Alongside his work at the Bar, Robert was elected as the District Councillor for The Bartons ward in 2014. Robert became Deputy Leader of West Oxfordshire District Council in 2016, standing down when he was elected to Parliament. He remained a District Councillor until May 2017, but donated his West Oxfordshire councillor's allowance for that period to the OurBus Bartons local community transport provider.
Outside of his professional life, Robert supports a number of military charities including RAFA & the Royal British Legion. He is a graduate of the Royal College of Defence Studies and a member of the Air League Council.
Robert is an accomplished blues guitarist and enjoys cycling, swimming, and hiking. He is also a diver, giving him a great interest in the marine environment; he is a member of the Marine Conservation Society.
