Update on Action on Water

Quick update on our action on water and the significant steps we are taking to improve our water on everything from monitoring to cleanup.

We are doing more to tackle sewage discharges than any other Government in history:

✅ 1st Government to introduce a reduction plan

✅ monitoring up from 5% - 90% since 2016

✅ record fines to make polluters pay with fines ring-fenced to go into infrastructure improvements

✅ largest infrastructure investment - £56m - in water company history

✅ largest ever criminal and civil investigations into sewage discharges, as a result of increased monitoring

✅ 93% of bathing waters meet highest standards of good and excellent

✅ There was no date by which companies were required to remedy storm overflows until we introduced one

✅ Storm Overflows Reduction Plan already aims to: "set stringent new targets to protect people and the environment. This will require water companies to deliver the largest infrastructure programme in water company history."
