In August the Government launched a consultation about proposals for mandatory closed-circuit television (CCTV) to be installed in all areas of slaughterhouses where live animals are present for animal welfare purposes.
Following this consultation, we’ve decided to go ahead with making it mandatory for all slaughterhouses in England to have CCTV.
We will make sure that:
- there is CCTV in all areas of the slaughterhouse where live animals are present
- official vets have unrestricted access to CCTV recordings
- recordings are retained for 90 days
We expect to introduce legislation early in 2018. All slaughterhouses will be required to comply following an adjustment period of up to six months.
