"Now is the time to take action because there is no alternative."
Tonight’s announcement was of course one that none of us wished to see.
But the reasons are as summed up above by the PM.
Simply, in this country, as across much of Europe, the virus is spreading even faster than the reasonable worst case scenario of our scientific advisers.
If we fail to take action, then there is a real risk of depriving non-Covid patients of the care that they need from the NHS.
And so these steps are proposed.
➡️ National restrictions will apply in England from 5 November until 2 December.
➡️ You must stay at home, with a limited set of exemptions, which are summarised below.
➡️ After 4 weeks we will look to return to a local and regional approach, based on the latest data.
We will get through this - but we must act now to contain the spread of coronavirus.
